Empire Wind 1 awarded offtake contract in New York’s fourth offshore wind solicitation round
Empire Wind 1, a joint venture between Equinor and BP, has been awarded an offtake contract in New York’s fourth offshore wind solicitation round. This new contract will allow the project to move forward in its plans to develop an offshore wind farm off the coast of Long Island.
The Empire Wind 1 project will have a capacity of 816 MW and is expected to power more than half a million homes in New York State. This new development is part of the state’s ambitious goal to generate 9,000 MW of offshore wind energy by 2035.
“This offtake contract is a significant milestone for the Empire Wind 1 project,” said Siri Espedal Kindem, President of Equinor Wind US. “We are excited to move forward with our plans to deliver clean, renewable energy to the residents of New York State.”
The Empire Wind 1 project is expected to create hundreds of jobs during construction and operation, providing a much-needed economic boost to the region. Construction is set to begin in 2022, with the wind farm expected to be operational by 2024.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul praised the award of the offtake contract, stating that it will help the state achieve its renewable energy goals while creating jobs and boosting the economy. The Empire Wind 1 project is just the beginning of New York’s journey towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.
